God bless Crazy Aunt Purl's grandmother

Because the sainted woman has given us all the Oh.My.God chocolate cake recipe of all time! It's dead easy to make and it tastes fantastic. Not one of your fancy, intense, dark chocolate extravaganzas - just a good, old-fashioned, gooey lump of chocolate heaven.

Crazy Aunt Purl's
Oma's Chocolate Cake Recipe

Now I'm a real cake pig - I have astonished (and probably horrified) people with the amount of cake I can pack away - but I could only manage a small piece of this cake at a time - v.rich.

Helpful hints: 1) If you can't find buttermilk use runny plain yoghurt (thin it with a bit of milk if it's too thick) and 2) a "box" of powdered sugar = 1lb. Yes, that's a whole pound of powdered sugar for the frosting. You got a problem with that?

Wir lieben Sie, Oma!

Oh! I am so thrilled you liked it! You're making me hungry just looking at that beautiful cake :)

I forwarded your email to my mom, I know how much she will love it. Bon apetit!

I caught your comment on my post on the Pineapple doily at my blog(http://craftypretender.blogspot.com) and had to look for a place to reply to you.

so I come onto your blog and arrrrrrr... chocolate cake!!!! *swoon* LOL

In reply to your question, I bought the pattern of thread crochet doilies off the Ondori series of books while in Tokyo, Japan last year. hmm I got it at about (after conversion to British pounds for you... GBP 5.60 or so... about 20 patterns in symbol crochet)

Crafts are a huge thing in Japan and crochet and knitting are among the top favourites. Ondori is, I believe, the leading multi=craft publisher.

Do you do symbol crochet? I find it so much easier! -- EeKoon, in Malaysia.

    Welcome! I knew you were coming so I baked a cake. {LOL}

Thanks for the crochet info - I'll definitely be checking Ondori out. Hope they're available online.

Yes, I do do symbol crochet - it's soooo much easier than written instructions because you can "see" where the stitches are supposed to go.

I stumbled across a fantastic Russian site a while back - loads of symbol patterns for the most beautiful doilies: www.hot.ee/bn/crochet/doily1.htm. Just click on the links below the pictures (if you can spare the time from your stitching!). That's the other good thing about symbols - no translation needed!

(I'll post on your blog as well)

Tempting, isn't it?! Well, get out your mixing spoon and have a bash at the real thing! It's worth it.

hi! I checked the Ondori website... it's in Japanese! *slaps forehead*

But I believe there are some books sold on Amazon.co.uk as well. It is a pity that selection is limited because they produce a lot of titles, for anything from cross stitch, patchwork, quilting, crochet, beading etc.

If you need any help getting a doily pattern book from Ondori, please let me know... i might be able to look around the bookstores in malaysia for you. - Ee Koon (craftypretender)

    Ee Koon -
Thanks for looking into Ondori for me. I'll have to Google a good source for their books. And very kind of you to offer to check your bookstores for them. Hopefully it won't come to that! Heaven knows I don't really *need* any more patterns ;-)

I'll tell ya what - I made another one of these (yes, already) and I used all butter... It's even better than the first one! Oooooooooo

    Hi funny thing!

It's white vegetable fat. Yeah, I don't really see the point either. The first time I made the cake I used half marg, half butter. Great. The next time, I used all butter. Fantastic! It seemed to come out even gooey-er.

Hi! Just wondering how you've been ... I see your chocolate cake is still very popular, lol

Currently, am doing some self-designed crochet patterns to get rid of some scrap acrylic yarn... I tried to make scrubbers, but they turned out so pretty that am figuring out whether they can pass off as "thick" coasters or not... was quite proud of my design, as well *Coughs embarassedly*

Anyway, I wrote to tlel you i went to the bookstore yesterday and found a new thread crochet book from JApan ... it has patterns for doilies, glass covers, covers for vases, stuff using beads, hairpin lace, flowers, small purses, tissue covers. Remembered you were looking for some Japanese books, so wondering whether you'd like a copy or not. I saw it and figured it was too advanced for me. lol. but if you'd like a copy I could get it and mail it over.
